Mechanical Image Duplicator

WHAT WILL YOU MAKE?

A simple mechanical device that can help you trace and copy other images.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

You will use cardboard engieering to carefully measure and construct a mechanical device.

STEPS

STEP 1

Measure and cut
Measure and cut your cardboard to make two 8 inch strips and two 5 inch strips.

STEP 2

Poke the holes
Measure 1 inch from each side of all the strips and poke a hole at that point with an unbent paperclip. Also poke a hole at the center point (4 inches in) on the two 8 inch strips.

STEP 3

Attach the strips
Join the two 8 inch strips to form a right angle. Run a paperclip through the hole to secure it in place. Add one of the 5 inch strips to the center of each 8 inch strip and secure them with paperclips too.

STEP 4

Add the pencils
Expand the hole in the end of one of the 8 inch strips large enough to hold a mechanical pencil, then tape it into place. Place another pencil through the overlapping holes of the two 5 inch strips. Add a final paper clip to the other end of the 8 inch strip and tape it to the table. Now you can hold the center pencil and, as you trace it over a picture, the other pencil will draw the image!

WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE?

Before Chester Carlson invented photocopying, inventors engineered various mechanical devices to replicate images. With a few everyday items found in the home, you can make a pantograph, an image duplicator that allows you to use one pencil to trace an image while another pencil follows its path in parallel to produce a near-identical copy.

National Core Arts Standards

The National Core Arts Standards are a process that guides educators in providing a unified quality arts education for students in Pre-K through high school.   • Grades K-2
    • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.MD.A.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
    • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
    • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
    • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
